The Redbacks prevailed 5 goals to 4 in a shootout. The teams went goal for goal until Buninyong skipped clear at 5-3, North managing a late goal as the Redbacks won its first game of the season.
In the remaining division one matches, Sebastopol Vikings made it two from two to start the season with a 3-0 win over Warrnambool. Temi Okoosi opened the Vikings’ account after 13 minutes before Brandon Bosher doubled the lead after 31 minutes. Michael Busija put the result beyond doubt after 67 minutes with Sebastopol’s third.
Meanwhile, Victoria Park took home a 2-1 win after conceding the opening goal. Vic Park’s first goal came courtesy of a penalty before Jake Sartori kicked what would prove to be the match-winner early in the second half.
Forest had the bye.
In the women’s division one, Ballarat Eureka Strikers made an encouraging start to its time in the league.
The club’s under-16s, who have been pushed up to division one, gave a great account of themselves, defeating Ballarat 1-0 – a side that enjoyed a 9-0 round one victory.
Eliza Schembri made the breakthrough after 55 minutes to set-up the win.
Elsewhere, Bacchus Marsh and Forest Rangers were locked at 2-2 approaching the 90-minute mark, before Skye Fenyk found the back of the net after 85 minutes to put her side in front – the Rangers posting a 3-2 victory. While Sebastopol and Warrnambool shared the points, fighting out a 0-0 draw.
