A runner-up in last year’s Geoff Taylor Medal count behind Bungaree ruckman David Benson, Cowan has been voted the Bulldogs’ best player in both of its opening round defeats.
He picked up three votes in The Courier footballer of the year award in the clash against Beaufort and secured another three from Sunday’s battle with arch-rivals Hepburn.
That leaves him as the sole leader ahead of this weekend’s clash with Waubra.
Cowan is one vote clear of Dunnstown midfielder Sam Jenkins.
Jenkins collected two votes in the Towners’ upset win over Gordon on Saturday, with teammate Rylan Rattley named best on ground.
A large group of players are locked on four votes, including Buninyong big man Liam Rigby, Carngham-Linton recruit Luke Parker and Beaufort gun Michael Foster.
The award is decided with a 3-2-1 voting system, awarded by opposition clubs each round.
Rokewood-Corindhap’s Sam Chapman won the award in 2017.
