Girl power took over in Federation University’s Manufacturing and Engineering Skills Centre as about 200 girls from 14 secondary schools took part in a Try a Trade session involving brick laying, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, automotive and engineering.
“The Try A Trade activity will allow attendees to have a go at various trades and get some advice from teachers and employers,” FedUni TAFE training and employment advisor Brad Smith.
“This event will focus on the ability for females to get into trades and utilise this as a realistic career prospect.
“We are hoping it will greatly assist the next generation of tradeswomen.”
The girls, from schools throughout Ballarat, Bacchus March and western Victoria, also heard from regional female employers who promote female apprentices, Fiona Lawrie from Trades Women Australia, and employers and industry groups.
