The grand sounds of the Pleasant Street Uniting Church’s giant organ rang out for the final time on Sunday morning as parishioners said their goodbyes to an icon.

Earlier this month the church announced it would be closing its doors due to dwindling attendance rates, however that was hardly the case at the weekend when about 240 people poured into the building to hear the final service.
Congregation chairman Margaret Bennett said the event was a “joyous” occasion, despite the fact the service marked the end of more than 150 years of worship at the site.
“Although we were supposed to be sad it was such a joyous service,” Ms Bennett said. “The service itself was very carefully planned and therefore the idea was we go out reflecting on the past.”
The Uniting Church will now seek a buyer for the imposing building at 36 Pleasant Street South, while the organ will also be up for grabs.
The closure came on the same day Clunes’ St Thomas of Aquinas Catholic Church held its final service.
