Creswick coach Karinna Knowles was pleased with a strong start and end to the Saturday home game along with the improvement her players made after last weekend’s defeat to Learmonth.
“We were up by about six in the first quarter, so I thought we were travelling pretty well but Newlyn kept coming at us and kept pushing,” she said. “They got to within three goals even in the third quarter, it was a really tight game, but it was our last quarter where we pushed a bit harder and that’s when we were able to bring it out to about 13 goals.”
Knowles said the win had been a result of the Wickers being able to bring the ball cleanly down the court, strong, effective passes and the centre court doing a good job feeding the shooters.
“That was probably one of the things we struggled with previously, bringing it out of defence, and we’ve been working on that the last couple of weeks so it was good to see it working against a good team,” the coach said.
A third victory has also given the Wickers some added confidence going into their round six game against Daylesford on the road.
“It was great for the confidence of the girls to come off this win yesterday, especially since we lost last year against Newlyn,” Knowles said.
But there is still plenty of work to do, especially around the goal ring – although wind added to the challenge for the Creswick goalers.
“I had two goalers who were able to rebound their own misses on Saturday, but just getting a little more accuracy there,” the coach said.
Creswick’s defenders were best on court against Newlyn, with captain Samantha Whelan leading the way with a consistent four quarters, which included effective intercepting and rebounding.
Meanwhile, Springbank took the points after a one-goal thriller over a hungry Dunnstown to maintain its undefeated run this season.
But Learmonth and Bungaree remain in first and second positions respectively.
Learmonth enjoyed the biggest winning margin for the weekend after defeating Carngham-Linton, 78-21.
Bungaree also managed a big lead defeating Rokewood Corindhap by 47 goals on its home court for a fifth consecutive victory.
Ballan proved too strong for Beaufort, bouncing back from a tough loss last week to secure its second win, while Waubra got the job done over Gordon.
Daylesford is still searching for points after going down to Skipton, 50-16, as is Smythesdale going down to Clunes, 71-20.
