Participants chalked up 14,000 of the gruelling, repetitious jumping push-up exercise at a rate of $1 per burpee from sponsors in the fundraising drive for the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
Buninyong CrossFit had 25 gym-goers take up the marathon challenge at the weekend, including five ambitious athletes busting out more than 1000 burpees each after tailored training sessions to prepare their bodies.
Gym co-owner Kade Dowie said athletes tended to work in sets per minutes but there were no rules for how to get it done – just to do as many as you could.
“It’s no-one’s favourite exercise but it works well if you know you’re doing it for a good cause, and it’s easy to get people to sponsor – it can bring out the evil in sponsors happy to make you do burpees,” Mr Dowie said.
Buninyong CrossFit has raised more than $28,000 in three burpee marathons, donating via Ballarat’s Making a Difference Gala Ball.
Mr Dowie said he was proud in his team and rapt in the community support.
