SCARSDALE greyhound Not Mum's Choice has battled injury for most of his career, but will hope to put that behind him when he contests tonight's Ballarat Cup heats, 450m, at Morshead Park. The Wayne Wrout-trained son of Exceptional showed above-average ability as a youngster, but a host of injuries, including a broken wrist that went undetected for nearly a year, has meant that the three-year-old has raced just 29 times for eight wins. Wrout, who said he was offered $40,000 for the dog unraced, said he frequently visited vets to diagnose an injury."He went undetected for about nine months with a broken wrist," Wrout said."We had him x-rayed a couple of times and it never showed up."But it wasn't until Wrout was directed to Des Fagan that the injury was noticed - the leading vet used his computer to zoom in on the affected area, which showed a crack in a metacarpal of the right front wrist."He's had a hard career, he's had nothing but problems," Wrout said.Wrout is hoping for a change of luck in the third of seven heats tonight when Not Mum's Choice jumps from an unsuitable box six draw. The characteristically slow beginner is yet to win from his eight starts outside box five, but possesses a strong finishing burst, which could help him overrun his rivals, in what is one of the weaker of tonight's seven heats."Given any luck he can," Wrout said."He just needs an ounce of luck and if he can find the rail early, he can finish over the top."Not Mum's Choice, who is out of the former Darren Murray-trained bitch Not Dad's Choice, has won five races at the Ballarat 450m, with a best time of 25.31sec.BALLARAT DISTRICT-TRAINED STARTERSHEAT THREE, 8.20pmNOT MUM'S CHOICE (box 7).
