Boarding students from St Patrick’s College, Ballarat Grammar and Ballarat Clarendon College collected winter clothes, blankets and gold coin donations throughout the week for Ballarat charities serving the homeless.
St Patrick’s College director of boarding and ABSA Victoria chair Mike Silcock it was important students realised boarding was a privilege.
“I was a boarder for 11 years myself, so I know what it is like to be afforded that privilege,” he said.
“It is very important to me I don’t see our boarders taking a roof over their head and three meals a day for granted. I want them to recognise that many don’t have that privilege.”
Students took part in other activities during National Boarding week, including a one-kilometre walk from Sturt Street to Lake Wendouree, a show of solidarity with boarders across the country who also walked in their home towns.
St Patrick’s College day student council leaders spent Wednesday night in the boarding house as a taste of what life is like for the school’s boarding students.
