At night I heard a repeated “yip” call from a gum tree on our rural property. It was a single call, with a gap of a second or two before the next call. What is it likely to be? We went out with a torch but could not see anything.

M.T., Invermay.
Your call was most likely that of a sugar glider, which makes a short sharp yapping call that may be repeated for a minute or two.
Sugar gliders are widespread through the Ballarat region, but they are not often seen because of their nocturnal habits.
Like many native mammals, they need hollows to live in.
Yours would shelter in a hollow during the day, then glide from tree to tree seeking food at night.
They usually occur in pairs or small groups.
