Losses across all grades against Hawks Netball was not what it had hoped for.
A blistering opening term by the Hawks put Sovereigns’ championship side immediately on the back foot – 20 goals to four set-up a 76 goals to 27 victory.
Sovereigns is winless from its opening five matches. While a tough season was to be expected as the club rebuilds its top-end, the championship side all being younger than 24, it is the side’s percentage that would be most concerning.
A percentage of just 50.45 is a reflection of it being the lowest scoring team while it has conceded seven more goals each match on average compared to the next poorest defence, Wilson Storage Southern Saints, who are also yet to register a win.
Coach Guy Keane said there were glimpses of what it was trying to do, but nowhere near enough of it.
“It was not a great night for Sovereigns last night with all three teams going down and probably not playing anywhere near our best netball,” Keane said.
“Coaches and players disappointed with our efforts - all three teams showed moments of our potential but lacked consistency of effort in both attack and defence and ability to execute basic skills under pressure.
“We will refocus at training to continue developing in these areas and regroup for next week “
The division one side felt equally disappointed after it let a five-goal half-time lead slip to a seven-goal loss.
The Hawks coming away with a 57-50 victory.
Meanwhile in the 19/unders, it was the second and third quarters that cost Sovereigns. A one-goal quarter-time deficit got out to 10 – the eventual margin – by three quarter-time.
Hawks prevailing 51-42.
