There are plenty of easy ways to reuse and recycle materials at home to make sure you keep closing the recycling loop.
Think about what you do after dinner. Probably scrape food scraps into the bin? Starting to compost at home will not only reduce the amount to waste going to landfill but also create nutrient-rich fertiliser for your garden. Start using this to fertilise your veggie patch and grow your own vegetables. Soon the peels and scraps from your plate will have been grown in your own garden and they will eventually be used to fertilise plants grown in the future.
Focusing on reducing household waste and also looking at ways to reduce the amount of resources used are the best ways to help the planet. Composting and growing vegetables will reduce intake of fertiliser and vegetables bought at the supermarket. Try and keep this theme going through your entire household.
Use greywater (water from the washing machine or shower) to water lawns and gardens. This will reduce the households intake of water and reduce your water bill.
Solar panels will reduce intake of electricity from the grid – you might even get money back for the electricity your system produces. If solar panels are not an option physically or financially simply try to reduce the amount of electricity used in your home.
Turning lights off, turning appliances off at the powerpoint and not running a second fridge unnecessarily are just some ways which will help reduce your power bill. This will not only save you money but also help the environment as less electricity will need to be produced to power homes.
Start doing these things today to do your bit for the environment. However, you can also help more by encouraging others to do the same.
