THEY had a Point to prove 30 years ago.And the boys from Golden Point did so in emphatic style, marching into the September action before humbling North Ballarat by 47 points in the Ballarat Football League grand final.1980 was a golden year for Golden Point, the reserves also celebrating with a third consecutive premiership. The moustaches and mullets are mostly long gone and the club has since merged with East Ballarat, but for East Point, Saturday's MECU Ballarat Football League season opener against Redan at Eastern Oval will be about honouring that mighty Point side.As part of those celebrations, the Red Lion Kangaroos will take to the field in Golden Point royal blue and white as the 1980 premiers enjoy their reunion at the ground."It's terrific they're playing in the old jumper," 1980 Golden Point vice-captain and Henderson Medallist Peter Kiel says."I don't get to the footy as much these days so I am looking forward to attending the reunion."At least 35 of the senior and reserve premiership players are expected to attend the luncheon at Eastern Oval, including Kiel, who went on to win two Henderson Medals and seven Golden Point best and fairests. Kiel, now 51, also played 80 VFL games with St Kilda. The team's captain Mark White and full-forward Tony Howlett, regarded as the Dan Jordan of the time, are travelling from Western Australia to attend, along with the victorious reserves' coach Errol Couch. One of the Golden Point greats who organisers have not been able to track down is ruckman Ian Pendlebury. Reunion organiser Gerard Delaney said the club would love to hear from anyone who knows Pendlebury's whereabouts.Current East Point vice captain Jason Delaney, 26, is also excited about the prospect of wearing a Golden Point guernsey, for the first time since he played under-18 footy."I played 170 junior games in the jumper with Golden Point and under-18s was the first year the clubs amalgamated," he said."I remember that year we'd play in the Golden Point jumper one week and then the East Ballarat jumper the following week." The blue-and-white East Point jumpers worn in Saturday's match will be auctioned off in the evening after the game in the East Point club room.
