Hartigan, Moneghetti to lead the charge at Lake Wendouree

NATHAN Hartigan and Steve Moneghetti will lead the Ballarat charge when the state's top distance runners battle at Lake Wendouree tomorrow.Ballarat will host the Athletics Victoria 15-kilometre road race for the second consecutive year about a lapped lake course.This season more than 700 runners will vie for titles in open and masters' divisions.Australian world cross country representative Liam Adams (Athletics Essendon) will be the one to beat in the open men's but expect tough competition from Geelong-based New Zealander Jason Woolhouse and Box Hill's Steve Kelly.The women's events are a wide open field.Ballarat YCW's Karen Clark, Annie Martin and Wendouree's Michelle Hawkins are looking to be the highest placed Ballarat competitors.Juniors will contest under-20 to under-14 five-kilometre road race titles.Eureka brothers Stewart and Jack Davies are in good form for the under-16 boys' race.Lyra Meehan (Ballarat YCW) is a good chance in the girls' under-18 event while stablemate Aaron Green will vie for the boys' under-20 title.Junior racing will start the program at 1.30pm with 15km events to follow from 2.30pm.Traffic restrictions will apply about Lake Wendouree will vehicles only able to travel in a clockwise direction during racing.- STEVE Moneghetti has extended an open invitation for runners to join him on a Sunday morning running tour of Ballarat.With most metropolitan competitors expected to stay overnight, Moneghetti was keen to show why Ballarat was home to so many distance running greats.His crew will depart Sebastopol's Wilsons Lane at 8.30am for a 90-minute run.
