A university student caught driving 50km/h over the speed limit was returning to his Ballarat home to collect his computer, a court has been told.

Michael Alizzi, 23, was clocked with a laser travelling at 160km/h in a 110km/h zone on the Western Freeway.
Police impounded Alizzi's Volkswagen Jetta immediately after the incident on March 22, 2018, at 9.30am.
Alizzi pleaded guilty to speeding at the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Thursday.
The court was told he had one speeding offence from June 2017 where he received a fine.
Defence lawyer Jon Irwin said his client lived and worked in Ballarat but went to university in Melbourne.
He said Alizzi realised he left his computer in Ballarat and was returning home when he was caught at the high speed.
"It's not the sort of thing he indulges in and realises how unacceptable and dangerous it is," Mr Irwin said.
Alizzi paid $1213 to get his car back from police so he could sell it, Mr Irwin said.
Magistrate Gregory Robinson warned Alizzi he could go to jail for two years for driving at a dangerous speed.
"I have no problem with you doing that speed, but go on a race track to do it," Mr Robinson said.
"I have been passed by people doing that speed ... it's a frightening thing to have. Crash at 160km/h and it will be a disaster."
Alizzi lost his licence for 12 months and was convicted and fined $1600. He was order to pay $122.30 in court costs.
"You need to grow up and think about what you are doing. Jail is on the cards if you keep doing it," Mr Robinson said.
He said if Alizzi did not plead guilty, he would have been sent to jail.
