Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital new children and adolescent’s ward officially opened late Thursday afternoon. Patients will be moved back into a completely transformed modern and bright new space on Monday.
Nine-year-old Monty, who has a rare congenital heart defect, has already been begging to have a sleepover.
It is as promised: spacious; best-practice colour choices with subtle Australian animal motifs; cutting-edge technology; more space for families and easy-to-access tea points for parents; and, carefully grouped layouts for intensive care and day surgeries.
Monty’s mum Audrey Goodson said the ward felt built for families.
More than 25,000 people hit the streets for six annual CottonOn Group Run Ballarat events each spring, co-hosted by Adroit Insurance Group, in what was the primary funding driver behind the $3.5 million redevelopment.
Run Australia general manager Sam McGuane said the Ballarat children’s ward was one of the most modern, unique fit-outs his team had been involved in across the nation.
“It’s quite surreal how this began as a conversation, then fast-forward to now and imagining children here and interacting in a community-built facility,” Mr McGuane said. “Ballarat’s got a great fighting spirit, in lots of different ways it is passionate about things, and this shows in what’s delivered here.”
