Kyle Green appeared before the Ballarat Magistrates Court yesterday after police searched his house in January, allegedly finding cannabis, three vials of testosterone, a cattle prod, a samurai sword, ammunition and an imitation firearm.
However, Green was ill-prepared and failed to enlist a lawyer to represent him in the six months after being charged.
He told Magistrate Ron Saines he intended to plead not guilty to possessing several of the items, saying the firearm was a plastic cap gun that belonged to a young relative.
“I moved into the house once I got out of prison and most of the stuff was already there,” he said.
“Some of the stuff was mine, but not all of it, so I will plead guilty to some of (the charges), but not all.”
Green said the samurai sword was a “blunt ornament” and the cattle prod was a family heirloom that his father had used on a farm.
He also argued the drugs and ammunition did not belong to him.
A duty lawyer was called into the court and asked for the case to be adjourned until a contest mention, where the main disagreements about the case will be decided between Green’s defence team and police prosecutors.
The court was told Green had first been charged and bailed after police searched his house back on January 8.
Following this, he repeatedly failed to comply with his bail conditions and two warrants were issued for his arrest in April and in June before yesterday’s court appearance, Mr Saines said.
Green, who was supported by his sister in court, had his bail extended and will re-appear next month.
