The building was renamed Gnarrwirring Karung on Friday, meaning ‘learning place’ in the local Wadawurrung language.
FedUni reconciliation action plan committee chairman Geoff Lord said it was selected from student suggestions.
“The official naming meets many elements recognised within the FedUni reconciliation action plan committee such as enhancing community, embedding culture, providing opportunity and, most importantly, respect,” he said.
“The ceremony is a fine example of putting Aboriginal culture at the centre of our daily lives.”
University representatives and local Aboriginal custodians attended the ceremony.
