The first sale was made within 15 minutes of doors opening on Saturday morning.
The art frenzy was driven by the first Ballarat Arts Alive end of financial year original contemporary art sale.
Buyers had the opportunity to meet the artists and access local artwork at sale prices, including original contemporary paintings, sculptures, etchings, drawings, photography and ceramics.
Ballarat Arts Alive president David Twomey said several thousand dollars worth of art was sold during the sale.
“The sale was a good opportunity to help local the arts scene with a way of selling some art,” he said.
“It is always a challenge in one sense selling art. It is a discretionary item - and not the first thing people buy. But there is more chance of selling when it is well priced like the art was this weekend.”
It is likely the sale will be run annually.
Not for profit organisation Ballarat Arts Alive represents the region’s arts community.
