Temperatures reached a low of -2.7 at 6:39am.
It has not been that cold since August 20 in 2017, which saw an overnight temperature of -3.4 degrees.
The cold mornings Ballarat has already seen this July are due to a “high pressure system” moving of the top of the city this weekend, said Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster, Christie Johnson.
The first of July also saw temperatures dropping to -2.0 degrees.
The combination of “clear sky, no wind and dry air” is the perfect recipe for cold weather, said Ms Johnson, the “lack of cloud mean[ing] the heat of the day can escape.”
Temperatures will not be as cold over the coming week as Ballarat sees more cloud cover and overnight temperatures are predicted to remain above 0 degrees.
However, it “might still feel miserable,” warns the Bureau of Metereology, as showers and thunderstorms arrive this weekend.
Don’t forget, added dangers arrive while driving in this weather. Check our black ice map here.
And give yourself five extra minutes to defrost that windscreen in the morning. It may take time but it’s safer and could even save you money.
