The cabaret-style band and year 11 dance class have been invited from a Chinese regional body to perform in an international music festival.

Mount Clear VCE student and flautist William Kemp said it was pretty special not just to be performing overseas in China, but to also be playing in the save events as students from other countries, like the Czech Republic and Russia.

“We’ve been well-informed in what to expect over there,” William said. 

“We’ll also be involved in all sorts of Chinese culture. We’re a cabaret band, so we’ll be taking a lot of Australian music and local artists over there to play. There will be a lot of international music there too.”

In a combined performance, the year 11 dance class will dance to music from the band as they play.

Musicians and dancers have been preparing learning and rehearsing their sets since the start of the school year. 

They have been selling boxes and boxes of Freddo frogs about the wider school community to help fund their trip.

This is one of four trips to China for Mount Clear College this school year.

The school has close ties to China, particularly through teaching Chinese language and culture from years seven to 12.

The college principal and assistant principal are set to attend a principal’s forum early next term.

Mount Clear teachers will be leading a resilience training program for teachers in China.

Some students have also been selected to travel for a Beijing summer leadership program.

This performance trip will take 27 students to China.

Mount Clear College performing arts director Scott Mangos said most students had never been overseas before and, even for those who had, China would be a completely new experience.
