The police force says it has been in discussion with the club in regard to the incident, as well as the ongoing safety at matches.
Victoria Police released this statement:
“Police are aware of an incident which occurred at a football club at Darley Park over the weekend.
Bacchus March police have engaged with the football club in relation to the matter.
We are working with the local football leagues to ensure future games are a safe environment for spectators.”
EARLIER, 12PM: More footage of the Darley’s after-siren brawl has emerged as the club moves to defend its part in what it has labelled a “minor fracas”.
The vision, which sheds a new light on the incident, comes in the wake of a turbulent week for the Devils.
A league investigation of the brawl continues, but Darley has published a statement on its website denying any of its players or officials were involved, other than those “trying to break it up”.
You can watch the new footage here.
The statement denies it was an “all-in brawl” and says “reporting of the incident was exaggerated”.
The club has suspended its president and banned three supporters in the wake of the brawl.
A Darley executive committee emergency meeting indefinitely stood down club president Ray Newton for a “lack of judgment” in dealing with the supporters, who were deemed responsible for initiating and escalating the incident.
None of the banned supporters were club members, according to the club.
You can read the club’s full statement here:
“Despite media “sensationalising” of an incident at Darley Park on Saturday after the seniors game, DFNC feels that reporting of the incident was exaggerated.
For an after-siren incident, it is disappointing how much we have been exposed so repeatedly on social media, newspapers (hardcopy & online,) and on mainstream visual media!.
This was not an all-in brawl! It was a scuffle that included our club president and a supporter unknown to him. This resulted in a series of many people getting involved to break it up and stop any escalation of the situation.
WE ARE COOPERATING FULLY WITH OUR LEAGUE'S INVESTIGATION.
Apart from president Ray Newton, no other Darley players, officials or coaching staff were involved in the minor fracas, other than ensuring it was broken up quickly and to protect everyone involved.
LET'S BE CLEAR! THIS WAS NOT ALCOHOL FUELLED VIOLENCE, IT WAS NOT A BRAWL, IT DID NOT INVOLVE PLAYERS & OFFICIALS OTHER THAN THOSE WHO WERE TRYING TO BREAK IT UP. IT WAS OVER VERY QUICKLY AND THE CLUB HAS MANAGED THE AFTERMATH QUICKLY AND PROFESSIONALLY AS YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM THIS GREAT CLUB.
Darley Football Netball Club has a zero-tolerance policy and attitude, to violence and aggression at our ground. The club culture is of the highest standard and the success of this great club is attributed to its family-friendly environ.”
