The 22-year-old was stabbed in the lower back and his 20-year-old friend, also from Wendouree, sustained head and facial injuries when they were attacked by two men.
Ballarat Crime Investigation Unit detectives said they were told the two victims drove to a car park off Vickers Street when an altercation ensued with two other men.
It is believed the two offending men then fled in the victim’s Holden Commodore sedan which was later located burnt out in Bond Street, Ballarat.
Several Ballarat CFA units responded after a car fire was reported near the Chalk It Up Eight Ball Snooker Club about 6.40am.
The man with the stab wound was taken to Ballarat Base Hospital but his friend did not require medical attention for his non-life threatening injuries.
Police are yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the investigation is ongoing and have called for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
