Nick Huckfield returned to his Ascot Street home on Monday afternoon to find an opportunistic thief had committed a heartless act.
Someone had entered his house and stolen a urn containing his mother’s ashes.
Also stolen was a watch given to Mr Huckfield as a last Christmas gift by his late mother.
Both the urn and the watch were in boxes which, Mr Huckfield says, may have led the thief to believe they contained jewellery.
The thief also took a broken mobile phone, a pouch of tobacco and a bluetooth speaker. Mr Huckfield said the theft of the urn hurt him deeply, as his mother had died in February, aged just 50.
“It’s an opportunistic theft,” Mr Huckfield said.
“They climbed over the back fence while we were out. The urn was in a blue velvet box and maybe they thought it looked like jewellery, because my watch was in a similar box.”
He says while someone may want to keep his stolen watch, there’s no point in keeping the urn. He would like it returned, anonymously if necessary.
