The event grew from amid an artists’ revolution in Luxville, a mythical town which looks and sounds a lot like Ballarat. But those in a spin need not have been familiar with the ongoing, unfolding story of Luxville.
This was also a chance to just be part of a bigger movement.
Organisers left reasons for twirling up to the twirlers: it could be for joy, it could be for freedom, it could be for celebrating a chance to feel safe with others in Ballarat at night.
Together, twirling creating an incredible sight. The mass twirl was part of Ballarat Winter Festival’s Laneway Lumieres but moved inside due to weather installations which brighten up each night from 5pm to midnight.
The twirl will also feature as extras in an upcoming stanza of Luxville, a transmedia project that started about three years ago. Luxville has also come to life via film, a website, photography, live events and performances.
