She was guided through the hospital by Ballarat Health Services chief executive Dale Fraser and board chair Rowna Coutts, in the company of Ballarat mayor Samantha McIntosh and husband Anthony Howard QC, and spoke with doctors and patients along the way.
“I have seen the importance but I have also seen some wonderful modern aspects of this hospital,” Ms Dessau said.
“The concept of keeping people in their community when they are undergoing cancer treatment is very very important.”
The tour of the hospital followed a visit to the Arch of Victory and was part of a three day tour of Ballarat.
“This is one of the most rapidly growing cities in Australia not just Victoria so it is a very important part of our state – of course I want to see as much as possible,” Ms Dessau said. She will tour Her Majesty’s Theatre as the first part of a busy schedule on Wednesday.
