Vandals smashed a window at the club rooms, believed to be late on Sunday night and attempted to start a fire in the women’s toilets using a gas bottle.
Buninyong Football Netball Club president Phillip Wilson said the attack on the club made no sense.
“Their intent was obviously to burn the place down, fortunately they didn’t succeed and it won’t have an affect on the finals, the damage was all pretty superficial in the end,” he said.
“A neighbour reported hearing a ruckus overnight and we discovered the broken window, but we didn’t look inside the toilets.
“We’d had a final on Sunday and when the cleaners came in on Monday, they discovered what had happened there.
“It could have been horrible, we’re just glad no-one was injured,” he said. “It just makes no sense, there’s no motive for it at all.”
There was a series of minor crimes around Buninyong on Monday with a house at near lock-up stage set alight causing extensive damage inside, which a window was also smashed at the supermarket.
Ballarat Sergeant Lee Kendrick said a vandals had set fire to a range hood in the home about 8am with the fire spreading to the window.
He said damage was caused to the floor, windows and ceiling, but there was no structural damage to the home.
