The man was arrested at the scene after emergency services responded to a fire at a residence in Geelong Road at 10.30am.
The man arrested at the scene did not have any injuries.
The 50-year-old Canadian man was taken to hospital for assessment.
The exact circumstances surround the incident are yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing.
EARLIER: FIRE investigators are combing through a home which caught fire in Canadian this morning.
Police blocked a stretch of Geelong Road, near Elsworth Street, as emergency crews remain on scene of the blaze.
A small building at the rear of a property caught fire about 10.45am and was brought under control about 15 minutes later.
At least six CFA tankers were on scene.
Police and Powercor were also in attendance.
At this stage it is not known what caused the fire.
It is not believed there are any injuries.
