I did. And I can guarantee it was a little bit eerie.
It was part of Sovereign Hill’s new offering Lamplight Tours which offer a rare glimpse of the historical attraction after dark.
I joined a tour at 6.45pm on Friday August 17, and left an hour later shivering – not just from the cold night.
We were led by a costumed guide throughout the dimly lit streets, stopping to hear chilling stories from Ballarat’s past. But my experience began even before the tour started.
Asked to arrive 20 to 30 minutes before the tour time, I decided to slowly wander down the main street – only to be greeted by a staff member emerging from a dark building in full costume, warning me to be careful on the dimly lit streets, ‘you never know what you could find or where you could fall’.
Actors told stories of the characters who lived in the goldfields, the illnesses, accidents and deaths that gripped them and the strange and unexplainable happenings in gold rush Ballarat.
The Lamplight Tours run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
