Ms Gibson was a finalist in the prestigious APNA nurse awards for developing ground-breaking practice nurse dementia care model at Ballarat Community Health.
“Along the way, we realised that since dementia is part of a person, we should not be isolating the people living with dementia and their support persons from the rest of the patient population,” Ms Gibson said.
“We integrated cognitive awareness and dementia appropriate care into all chronic disease management and health promotion.”
Ms Gibson is rolling out educational sessions across western Victoria, has developed an online tool cognitive awareness tool for practice nurses and is studying her PhD on the role of practice nurses in dementia care.
“Persistence is one of my greatest strengths, coupled with giving my patients the best opportunity to have a good quality of life,” Ms Gibson said.
