The brewery and selling point closed last weekend after a week where sheriffs were seen taking possession of the brewing plant and stock.

The Courier can reveal the plant, including brewing platforms, canning and filling lines, fermenters and sundry items have been offered for sale on a third-party logistics site.

On Thursday night, the Athletic Club Brewery posted a message on its Facebook site, saying in part:

“ACB is currently going through a period of change and restructure and to this effect will be ceasing brewing and hospitality services at our Mair Street site. We are currently in the process of sourcing another site to recommence brewing but nothing concrete on that front just yet. Will have more news on that soon hopefully!”

The message goes on to say it will honour any bookings at the venue and that, “we have you covered”.

Former staff spoke to The Courier on Friday, saying they were still waiting on overdue group certificates and had no clear indication from their former employer about when superannuation would be paid.

One told The Courier he was aware of monies also owing to suppliers of malt and bottles for the business.

This comes on top of unpaid rents and unfulfilled sponsorship deals also incurred by the business.

The employee said it was outrageous that the business would contemplate restarting a brewery while there were outstanding debts from the Athletic Club to be paid. 

He said an overdue group certificate he received two days ago had no superannuation amount attached to it. When he queried where his superannuation was, he says he was told, ‘it will be paid in the next quarter.’

“The company should be paying its workers entitlements first, before anything else starts,” the former employee told The Courier.

“It’s not good enough.”
