Creswick’s supermarket is relocating to a brand new, purpose-built building across the road at 48 Albert Street. Current owner Steve Sellars originally purchased the store from Bill and Iris Huntley and has operated the business for the past 15 years, supporting the community and creating full-time, part-time and casual employment.
The offerings have continually improved throughout the years, as have the produce displays. The old ‘coffin’ style freezers were replaced with 20 doors of upright freezers, while the fresh produce was increased to incorporate a multi-deck cabinet and new dairy cabinet, both nearly 11 metres long. A new deli cabinet has also been added.
The switchboard was upgraded to accommodate the increased load and almost every compressor and condenser was upgraded. As the business grew, containers were hired for additional cool room space and grocery storage.

This was all done in the shadow of the sign at 48 Albert Street, indicating that a new IGA was coming soon. “I think it first went up in 2008/2009,” says Sellars. “We tried to ignore it (and) concentrated on improving our business.
“But it was inevitable that it would be built one day and it would be unsustainable to sign a new lease and continue to invest in the current site, which at the end of the day still wouldn’t be big enough or comfortable enough to satisfy our customer’s needs.
“Creswickians deserve a better supermarket, our dedicated staff deserve job security, and we are very excited about the new supermarket.”
