The teams travelled to Ballarat for Saturday’s game at the Minerdome to showcase the WNBL for regional fans.
The Boomers were without four of their stars as Australian Opals players Jenna O’Hea, Ezi Magbegor, Cayla George and Steph Talbot are overseas for the FIBA Women’s World Cup.
But Boomers’ recruit and scoring threat Lindsay Allen had her first run in WNBL after arriving in Australia on Thursday. The point guard has come from Las Vegas Aces in Women’s National Basketball Association.
While the Boomers led at each break, scores remained close throughout the game.
Boomers Maddie Garrick (19 points), Ash Grant (12 points), Chelsea D’Angelo (11 points) and Kalani Purcell (10 points) reached double digits in scoring, while Sarah Boothe (17 points, 20 rebounds) starred with a double-double.
Boomers and the Spirit are set to play three more times before facing other teams.
