The out-of-control Commodore struck the pole on Grevillea Street, near the Learmonth Road intersection, just after 2am.
It is believed the driver was swerving to avoid a dog on the road.
The 22-year-old male driver was taken to hospital with chest and shoulder injuries in a stable condition.
The crash has left much of Wendouree without power, according to the Powercor website.
Residents in Mitchell Park and Lake Gardens could also be affected.
It’s not estimated power will be restored until 11am.
