The 19-year-old with just 25 bouts to his name defeated Kaleb Kozak (45 bouts) to win the elite men’s state title, earning him the opportunity to represent Victoria and compete for the national title in Canberra later this year.
“It felt great to finally get the state title, but now my focus is on getting that Aussie title,” Denahy said.
Denahy is relatively new to the sport in comparison to many of his opponents, who have been boxing since a young age, but his resilience and motivation have helped him learn and adapt quickly.
Starting boxing at 15, Denahy trained at Ballarat’s Brawl Boxing under Clinton Vermaack, who has big hopes for the teenager.
He moved to East End Boxing in Croydon – a four hour round trip by train five times a week – to take his boxing to the next level under the instruction of owner and coach Brian Butler.
While the state title is his biggest achievement, Denahy has represented Victoria three times at the national championships.
This time he will compete as number one rather than runner-up and believes he is primed for his best shot yet at the title.
While he knows competition will be tough, Denahy says the key is to focus on his own ability and have confidence in himself.
Denahy’s long-term goals include the world championships and Olympic Games.
With monthly Myki costs about $350 and competition travel upwards of $600, Denahy is looking for a sponsor to help out financially. To get in touch contact 0429 905 635.
