The NDIS is providing increased funding for many families and creating choice about what supports are the most important. For Alicia, this means that she can access therapy for her young son who has high functioning autism.

Early intervention therapy supports her son to learn the skills he needs to participate more fully in life. At the same time, she is also gaining the skills she needs to best support him as he grows.

Being able to choose her own service provider was a priority for Alicia, as she was trusting them with the care of her very precious child. Initially she found that using her funding wasn’t quite so simple, with some therapists “refusing to see us as they wanted their money instantly before we left the clinic”.

NDIS funding can only be claimed after the service has been delivered, so she says, “it is stressful trying to find the upfront payment for therapy which can be hundreds of dollars a week”.

Luckily for Alicia, Financial Plan Management (FPM) has made all the difference. “The therapists are paid very quickly, and we’ve never had a problem with even the therapists who initially wouldn’t take us on,” she says. “Under FPM they are finding the process easy and are now even taking on more patients under FPM.”
