McCallum Disability Services Inc. have literally cemented their commitment to constructing purpose built, technologically advanced homes for people with disability with the construction of a four bedroom house beginning in Lucas.
The architecturally designed house will provide three full-time residents with 24-hour on-site support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme’s Specialised Disability Accommodation model.
McCallum’s CEO Tyrone McCuskey said the house will feature advanced technologies that will provide residents with an enhanced quality of life. This includes smart lighting and blinds that can be operated via handheld smart devices, provisions for tracking and hoist systems to enable easy moveability of residents who have no or limited mobility and a technologically advanced hydrotherapy bath to help residents with muscle and joint related issues. The house will also feature sinks and benchtops that can be height adjusted for people in wheelchairs in the bathrooms and kitchen.

“McCallum has been proactive in purchasing land in areas of Ballarat that will enable residents to be within reach of community services such as health care, supermarkets and shopping, as well as parks and playgrounds,” said Mr McCuskey.
“This house is being built to the highest disability standard under the Australian Liveable Housing Guidelines and will enable our residents to flourish in a supported model of living.
“We’re extremely proud to be able to provide a home of this standard, that is modern, built to enable and provide high levels of care to people with disability. We’re hopeful that this is the first of many new builds for McCallum in the coming years,” he said.

McCallum plans to install more than 20 solar panels on the building after receiving a $5000 grant from Ballarat Renewable Energy & Zero Emissions (BREAZE) through the “One Dollar, One Watt” program.
The grant funds were issued to BREAZE by the Rainbow Serpent Festival Community Grant.
The house will be completed in October with McCallum planning for residents to move in prior to Christmas.
