McCartin won the Sally McLean Medal after polling 23 votes, just one vote ahead of runner-up Sunbury goaler Ruth Smith at the Mercure Ballarat Hotel and Convention Centre on Monday night.
Lake Wendouree’s reliable and versatile veteran Kara Hart claimed third spot with her season earning 19 votes.
McCartin did not receive a single vote until round five when she produced her first of six best on court performances in a game against Melton South. She polled in nine rounds overall.
A hot streak late in the season from McCartin, as North Ballarat City pushed to second spot on the ladder, led to 11 votes in the final six rounds and put her to the front of the leader board.
Her top achievement in six years with North, McCartin was feeling shocked when she got over the line in the count, but was able to share the special moment with her two sisters, also teammates, and mother, who is coach.
Playing every game this year as a reliable centre along with some time spent on the wing, McCartin has been a welcomed source of consistency in an interrupted season for North with key players unavailable early on.
After missing out on the fairytale ending for two consecutive years, McCartin will lead her team in another tilt at the premiership when North faces East Point in the grand final on Saturday.
“We’re excited, we’re ready to go,” McCartin said. “We’re looking forward to training on Thursday and then just getting out there on Saturday and hopefully getting the job done.”
Runner-up Smith has enjoyed a stellar season for Sunbury after stepping up to play a vital role in the goaling circle.
Meanwhile, Sunbury’s Suzi Johnson won the B-grade best and fairest award with 19 votes and five best on ground performances.
In what was another close vote count, East Point’s Perri Fenton took out the runner-up award after trailling by a single vote.
The C-grade vote count produced joint winners Darley’s Megan Jackson and Sunbury’s Shelby Holter, who both polled 21 votes.
The pair was four votes ahead of joint runners-up Ballarat’s Katrina Baulch and Sunbury’s Melanie McLaughlin.
It was a similar scenario in D grade with Lake Wendouree’s Larney Allan and Shae Fogarty sharing the glory with 26 votes, while Melton’s Rachel Guthrie was a vote behind from joining them.
Bacchus Marsh’s Karissa Buttigieg won the E-grade best and fairest award with 16 votes, while the runner-up was awarded to Melton South’s Georgia Blyth.
In 19/under competition, Lake Wendouree’s Eva Gillett took out the top award after polling 23 votes.
