East Point forward Brad Whittaker has an important mission ahead of him in the Ballarat Football League grand final on Saturday, but first had to guide his class through one final week of lessons before holidays.
Footy day was the theme for the last day of term at Urquhart Park primary and while most wore their AFL colours proudly, pupils created a “Go Roos, East Point” poster to help cheer Whittaker and his team on.
Ashton was confident his teacher had what it took to beat Melton for the flag at Mars Stadium.
“He’s a really good player and he’s passionate,” Ashton said. “He won’t stop until he gets the job done.”
East Point is vying for the club’s first senior football premiership since the amalgamation of East Ballarat and Golden Point in 2001.
The Kangaroos have only featured in one grand final – 2009, under coach Michael Hynes and captain Dan Jordan, in a shock loss to Redan.
Whittaker was in his first year of under-18s at the time.
