A cast of 15 Ballarat residents will bring the Pemberley estate to life, with performances of the Jane Austen novel’s adaptation on until October 6 at Courthouse Theatre, Lydiard Street.
The classic romantic tale of strong-willed Elizabeth Bennet and stuffy Fitzwilliam Darcy is imbued with social commentary about class struggles at the time.
Monday night’s show will raise money for the Save Her Majesty’s Theatre appeal.
Director Alexandra Meerbach said the “fun and frothy” production was full of iconic characters which the actors had worked hard to make their own.
“I really like the fast-paced aspects of the script, it’s really about telling a classic story in a way that is engaging,” she said.
“There are some classics that stand in time as ones which audiences just enjoy watching, there’s no harm in going out and simply enjoying a production for the story line.”
The theatre company is celebrating its 80th year of operation this year.
