Revolution Wellness is aimed at women aged 16-25 to help improve stress coping mechanisms, health and wellness, and achieving life balance.
Each session across seven weeks focuses on a different topic including changing attitudes towards stress and sleep, addressing high expectations, empowering women and managing finances.
The education component runs for 20 minutes, while the session ends with yoga and meditation with instructor Jackie Allen.
headspace Ballarat youth worker Alannah Candy said the program, which had filled up quickly, came as a response to the demand on services.
“We get high demands of referrals that come through for young women experiencing difficulties during this time of year… so we thought hopefully some young girls can develop some appropriate coping strategies to help with the end of year stress,” she said.
“But we also get increased demands from schools to come out and do presentations on managing stress, how to manage work and also sleep, which they find impacts on their young people. That’s why we’ve decided to run this program again.”
One of the changes to this year’s program is a topic on empowering women, looking at how gender stereotypes can have an impact on stress.
“We’ve covered a whole range of different topics because we understand there are other things (young women are dealing with),” Ms Candy said.
“We know with young people who are starting uni it can be really difficult to juggle work, uni demands, then social life and relationships, and obviously the increased demands in costs associated with uni that can make it quite difficult.”
From past sessions, Ms Candy said practical strategies in dealing with stress such as breathing techniques had also proved valuable.
“The girls reported last year using the techniques before going into their exams, it helped ground themselves and reset a bit,” she said.
