A community appeal raised more than $1 million to help bring a much-needed new Hospice base to meet growing demand for palliative care across the region.
Hospice chairman Geoff Russell said early works start to show Ballarat what their efforts are creating.
"To see this become a reality is quite awe-inspiring...It’s a great time for all of us and the community,” Mr Russell said. “This is a dream come true after being in planning for a number of years.”
Steel works are likely to start taking shape in the next month in what will predominantly be a glass building.
Visitors will walk into an open reception with a curved, lotus-shaped waiting area.
The middle third will be office space with counselling rooms on the floor above.
Rooms will look out and open on to a reflective garden, which will also feature private spaces.
The back third of the building will feature ample space for Hospice’s equipment.
Demand for Hospice services in Ballarat increased almost 20 per cent in the past financial year. Hospice has long outgrown their Drummond Street offices.
Victorian Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford turned the first sod on the build in August, almost one year after the state government granted a further $6.2 million for the build.
Construction is due for completion mid next year.
A Star is Born to help Hospice grow
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga will take centre stage for Ballarat Hospice Care’s annual charity movie night at Regent Cinemas on October 18.
The stars feature in the modern re-make of A Star is Born, the story of a young singer who meets and falls in love with an established rock star only to find her career takes off while his goes into decline.
The original 1937 film featured Janet Gaynor and Fredric March and has also been remade featuring Judy Garland and James Mason (1954) and Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand (1976).
Charity Movie Night tickets must be purchased in advance from Ballarat Hospice Care in Drummond Street South. For more details, phone Hospice 5333 1118.
