Since the first curtain-up of the competition on September 22, thousands of dancers have shared the spotlight in disciplines ranging from ballet to tap, jazz and more.
Dancers have come from interstate and locally to perform on the Royal South Street stage at Federation University’s Founders Hall, with the final night of dance and awarding of the inaugural Energetiks Dance for Life Competition to take place on Saturday night.
Royal South Street competitions continue until November 3 with the Herald Sun Aria grand final on Tuesday and Commbank Calisthenics competition from October 10 to November 3 completing the three months of competition.
Royal South Street Society chief executive Brett Macdonald said competitor numbers in the dance competitions were down 18 per cent with the move away from Her Majesty’s Theatre, which is closed for safety works.
“Founders Hall is working really really well and our instrumental section and dance community has found it a really great venue, but in saying that we … want to be back in the (Her Majesty’s) theatre,” Mr Macdonald said.
“With entries down because of the closure of the theatre you don’t get those people through, the audience is down because there’s less competition which really has a financial knock-on to us.”
Mr Macdonald said planning was already well underway for next year’s 128th Royal South Street Society competitions.
“It is such a massive event and undertaking planning is always ongoing throughout the year to ensure all of our competitors have the best experience possible,” he said.
