The race, named in honour of the late publican and mentor Ian Larkin, will become a permanent fixture of the local racing calendar with the winning owner being presented with an engraved pewter as a memorial for the much-loved hospitality giant.
“Ian Larkin had long been a huge supporter of local racing and hospitality, this is our way of recognising Ian and all he did for the industry in Ballarat,” said CEO of Ballarat Turf Club Lachlan McKenzie.
In conjunction with the memorial race, Ballarat Turf Club will also host the Hospitality Race Day Event, traditionally Publicans Day, which will consist of a two-course sit down lunch featuring comedian Dave O’Neil, live music and fundraising for Bowel Cancer Australia.
“It is going to be fantastic getting together many of the publicans from around town to celebrate a man who contributed so heavily to our industry,” The Red Lion Hotel’s David Canny said.
Single tickets and tables of 10 are still available to purchase for the Hospitality Race Day event.
