Joel Mahar is making the move from Bungaree, where he has enjoyed a decorated career.
In addition to capturing this year’s Geoff Taylor Medal, he captained Bungaree to the 2014 CHFL premiership.
East Point had stunning success with CHFL talent in this year’s premiership campaign, with first-year players Jacob Brown (Hepburn), Cam Lovig (Daylesford) and Joel Ottavi (Buninyong via Keilor) each making key contributions to the success.
Mahar is the second top-end recruit announced by East Point – joining former North Ballarat Roosters VFL-listed Billy Jones.
They top up a list, which will include all 22 premiership players.
East Point president Gary Wilson said the club had been in discussions with Mahar for a few years and almost landed him for the season just gone.
He said it was a pleasing outcome to finally get him across the line.
Wilson said Mahar was an “in and under” player who would add leg speed to the Kangaroos.
Wilson said the improved playing surfaces in the BFL resulting from the City of Ballarat’s sports ground redevelopment program and the subsequent improved quality of the competition was proving a key in attracting strong CHFL talent such as Mahar.
East Point has also welcomed back former thirds ruckman Jaykeb Lench, who has not played since 2014 when he joined the army.
