As the saying goes, you need the gift of the gab to sell ice to eskimoes, and the same could apply for selling potatoes to potato farmers. Pupils at Bungaree Primary School have proven they have that gift, selling a tonne of donated potatoes back to local potato farmers in a unique fundraiser for Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre.

The school’s 12 pupils raised $559 for BRICC from their Spudarama fundraiser, which they presented to BRICC representatives during a visit to the centre on Tuesday.

Pupils weighed, bagged, sold and cooked with spuds, turning them in to potato gems, soup, chips, scallop potatoes and mash. There was also potato art, spud sports and other activities.
“For a small school it’s an amazing fundraiser. The kids learn leadership skills, how to work with the community, and the spirit of kindness and gratitude,” said principal Catherine Barnes. “We are actively teaching gratitude, and are thankful for the services around town that are there that we can access if we need to.”
