Coaches are replacing numerous trains between Ballarat and Southern Cross Station.
The signal fault has halted all train services to Ballarat, Bendigo, and Geelong, which are the three biggest V/Line services.
It is not yet known when the services will be restored.
Some trains have been halted on the tracks with passengers still aboard, while V/Line tries to source buses to get people home.
This comes on a day that V/Line was again thrust into the spotlight after Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews said $150 million would be spent on separating V/Line and Metro tracks.
As part of the plans, the government would build new electric rail tracks from the city to Wyndham Vale and Melton, following calls from transport planners and public transport advocates.
