A 21-year-old man who allegedly threatened to drag his heavily pregnant partner down the street with his car, has been “given one last chance” to appear in court.

Jake Quinton was scheduled to appear in the Ballarat Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for a plea hearing but his defence lawyer submitted that Quinton was having difficulty trying to work and comply with strict bail conditions including not driving, reporting at Corio Police Station daily, complying with the Court Integrated Services Program (CISP) and abiding by a curfew. She said Quinton was travelling between Ballarat and Geelong for CISP and now had a “very new baby.”
“So far his level of compliance has been spasmodic,” Magistrate Ron Saines said, “and given the seriousness of these offences and irregular CISP attendance, I have no choice but to ask for a warrant be issued.”
Quinton is facing multiple charges, including false imprisonment and unlawful assault of a woman on 28 July 2018, damage to the contents and walls of a house on 14 July 2018, causing $1000 damage, and damage to property belonging to the Department of Human Services on 14 July.
In an earlier appearance, the court heard the accused had verbally abusing the victim at her Mount Pleasant home on July 14, before allegedly throwing items around the house and smashing a chest of drawers. He then allegedly got into his car and rammed the victim’s front fence and letter box.
Quinton also faces multiple driving charges, including driving unlicensed and speeding in Melbourne on 7 February 2018 and driving unlicensed and in a manner dangerous on 21 July 2018 in Ballarat.
Mr Saines stood the matter down and later adjourned all charges to 22 October, saying a warrant would be issued if “he doesn’t turn up.”
