Ballarat City Fire Brigade officers were called to the scene just after 11.30pm and found the bins on fire in a courtyard, with one already having spread to a seat nearby.
Station officer Jarrod Allan said the fires were quickly brought under control, but said it could have been a lot worse had the fires spread to any one of the buildings nearby.
“If it had have gone under a verandah or alcove, it wouldn’t have taken much to burn,” he said.
“It’s not very common that something like this happened, but it could have been a lot worse, there were no injuries.”
Police are investigating the cause of the fires which are believed to have been deliberately lit.
