The patriarch of Ballarat’s best known racing family scored with three-year-old filly Miner’s Miss in a maiden at Avoca on Saturday.
The Miners Rest-based Payne has not long returned to training ranks.
He had two starters in December last year – his first horses to the races since 2011 – and reappeared with Miner’s Miss in March and has has had eight starters for the calendar year.
In a big day for the family, his eldest son Patrick also trained winners at Avoca and Caulfield.
With Paddy Payne senior saluting, four members of the family have each trained winners this season, with son Andrew and daughter Michelle also enjoying success.
