BOX WARS will take over the Eureka Centre grounds on Sunday from 1pm for the Biennale of Australian Art, kicking off with a construction workshop until 3.30pm.
The main event at 4pm has those over 15 covered in cardboard-box armour, running amok and trying to destroy all that has been created.
Started in Melbourne in 2003, BOX WARS has become an international sensation, with cardboard warriors duking it out in Canada, Russia and the Netherlands.
Ballarat’s battle bands will be on hand to provide a hard rock soundtrack to the event, with The Yard Apes, Anticline, Snake Valley and Horris Green wielding their guitars while competitors wield their paper weapons.
Biennale of Australian Art’s music coordinator Sherry Rich said they wanted to create an exciting musical event for older young people, who often aren’t catered for in regional festivals.
“Something to target that teenage crew, the 15-20 age group, was really missing in this area,” she said.
“We also thought it was a great way to bring awareness to the battle of the Eureka Centre.
“So we talked to BOX WARS, and they really love to tie in their battles with history and place and community, so they were really excited to take on the challenge of creating battle gear specific to Ballarat.”
BOX WARS ethos is to make use of discarded boxes, with cardboard, tape and paint the only materials used for the armour.
